Learning Some Lead

Postby Cobalt1254 on Wed Feb 04, 2009 6:04 pm

Im at the point in my guitar playing that where I lack the most is playing solos and for that fact just playing any type of lead. I know all the scale shapes both Major and Pentatonic but don't really seem to be taking it anywhere. I have a couple of solos written out for me, one being Hotel California. Would it do me any good to learn it note for note and get to be able to play it exactly like the record? Would that eventually help me or would I just be like a trained chimp but never really learning anything about what is going on? Thanks.

"Hotel California" by The Eagles is one of my favorite guitar solos of all time. No surprise as it ranks as one of the most popular and is always featured in various "Top 100 Guitar Solos" lists. But it's not a good place to start. The progression includes key changes and the tonality of the scale changes mid verse. Plus, it includes pentatonic, major and harmonic minor notes. If you want to learn how to guitar solo, then you need to start with something simpler.

I recommend you first focus on pentatonic scale melodies, riffs and solos. Follow the link to see the examples I have posted on YouTube.

Later you can do the same thing with major scale patterns.
