enphasizing notes when using the modes

Hi Desi,

When playing in a mode do you recommend enphasizing certain notes? i.e if playing D Dorian enphasize the D notes.
Also is it common to outline the chord tones in a progression when playing in a mode?

Thanks

Yes, emphasizing the modal root and outlining chords help tie the scale to what you're playing over. I don't mention this in my modes DVD because it often causes people to miss the fundamental modal concept (guitar players resort back to the "modes are scale patterns" or "modes are starting points" ideas which are not entirely correct).
