Chord progression above the root

About guitar chord progressions and playing by numbers (a.k.a. "Nashville Number System"). How to map out the fretboard, chart songs, identify chords in a key and transpose.

Chord progression above the root

Hello,
My name is Ezra and although I am new to this forum, I have several of your programs. All are good and informative. I am a basses and have taken the concept of guitar chord progression (as applied to the 6-string guitar) and have applied it to the (5 & 6) -string bass guitar.
The application of the concept is working well, as I am not only now know what they are playing (i.e. m7add13; Madd6; 13: etc), but I am also beginning to understand what progression [within the immediate scale] comes next and where it should be.

That leads me to this question? As an example: in the key of "C" ("c" being the first degree on the A-string, 3rd fret); the "D or 2nd degree" on the A-string, 5th fret; "E or 3rd degree" on the A-string, 7th fret; F or 4th degree on the E-string 1st fret; G or 5th degree on the E-string 3rd fret and A or 6th degree on the E-string and 5th fret) when chord progression occur above the root of the scale, how do I determine the pattern? Dose the pattern on the D and G string (playing arpeggio) follow the pattern on the A-string, when playing progressions on the D-string, dose the A-string pattern now become the same as the F, G & A on the E-string? How should I approach this?

HELP :?
Ezra

I'm not exactly sure I understand your question, but I'm going to try to answer it anyway.

Always use strings 6 and 5 as your guide. Use the octave system taught in Fretboard Theory Chapter 1 A Quick Review. Notes along strings 4, 3, 2 and 1 can all be traced back to strings 6 and 5.

Does this help?
