Using the C-A-G-E-D system to build and play guitar chord inversions, arpeggio patterns, shapes and fingerings including advanced barre chords (bar chords) and chord fragments. Plus how to map the fretboard and learn caged songs.

Guitar Barre Chord Fingerings, Wrapping the Thumb

Hi Desi. A couple of quick questions for you. In the Caged system is the D form supposed to be as hard as it seems or it is just me? Here is the question I have had for a long time. Ive noticed a lot of players play the E form bar chord by using a thumb on the low E string. When I try that way I have a hard time getting the high E string to sound clear. Is this just a matter of practice or do they mute that string. Ive seen some rockabilly examples where they are not muting the string.

Everything is a matter of practice, especially when using brand new chord shapes as taught with the guitar CAGED system. Breaking up the "E form" barre chord and wrapping the thumb is extremely common. Don't try to get it all at once. Break it down into smaller, more manageable pieces. Then go from there. Same goes for the "D form" barre chord. It's an awkward shape.
