Minor CAGED trouble...HELP!!!

Using the C-A-G-E-D system to build and play guitar chord inversions, arpeggio patterns, shapes and fingerings including advanced barre chords (bar chords) and chord fragments. Plus how to map the fretboard and learn caged songs.

Minor CAGED trouble...HELP!!!

Hi Desi!

I've been playing for almost 30 years, no real training, no real theory. I was pretty solidly stuck in the pentatonic hole until I started reading Fretboard Theory. I am now slowly digging my way out. The book is absolutely fantastic and I really feel the entire instrument slowly opening up to me. I am able to see things, connections, sounds that I have never before seen. Many thanks for such a great book!

Ok, here's my problem. I've followed everything up to page 58 with no problem. I just don't get WHY the minor chord forms require the pentatonic scale to shift. I know that's the way it sounds correct, but I want to know the why. Also, why have the names of the shapes changed? Why is the shape we used to call "G shape" now called "Em" shape? Also, what are the chord patterns and arpeggios for the minor CAGED group?

Many thanks for your help. Once again, the book is awesome!

Best,

I'm not sure I understand your questions, but I'll try to answer them anyway.

The minor CAGED chord forms don't require the pentatonic scale patterns to switch. I just wanted to illustrate the minor forms in relation to the pentatonic patterns as I did with the major forms earlier in the same chapter.

The names haven't changed, they just have an "m" for "minor" added. C A G E D become Cm Am Gm Em Dm.

Minor CAGED arpeggio patterns are illustrated together with everything else on page 58. The black and gray circles combine to make the minor arpeggio patterns. Again, it's the same system I used for the majors earlier in the chapter.
