Remembering Partial CAGED Shapes

Using the C-A-G-E-D system to build and play guitar chord inversions, arpeggio patterns, shapes and fingerings including advanced barre chords (bar chords) and chord fragments. Plus how to map the fretboard and learn caged songs.

Remembering Partial CAGED Shapes

1. Are they any tricks for remembering the partial forms the
various CAGED shapes? Since each major form has a number of partial
forms, it's a bit hard to remember all of them, and I'm wondering if
there are any tricks to it.

In Fretboard Theory, I use Xs to illustrate on the fretboard where the unused notes are with each shape. This is done so that you can always relate a partial chord form to its complete parent CAGED form. The whole form should always be your focus, even when you're just fingering part of it. The more songs you learn and the more you routinely incorporate the shapes in your guitar playing, the better everything will stick.

2. Can you also give the names of some songs other than hard rock as
examples of songs that use the partial forms? Most of the examples in
your book (I think) are from the hard rock genre and I'm only familiar
with a very few of them. (I'm from the older generation.) About the
only artist that I'm familiar with from your examples is Eric Clapton.

I plan to reference more CAGED songs in the future. What guitar music and artists would you like to see?

Some artist of interest to me, for example, would be Jim Croce, maybe Roy Orbison. I can give you more examples if needed, after I think about it.

thanks,

Greetings,

I agree about the seeming emphasis on 'hard' artists. Hey, tons of other genres to get at in addition to the other post. How about, for the older guys, James Taylor ? He's pretty slick w/ his bass lines and compositions. Others : Jackson Brown, Neil Young, Paul Simon, Paul McCartney, Vince Gill, Bonnie Raitt, Randy Scruggs. Bands: Poco, Ozark Mountain Daredevils, CS&N,

How bout some insight on the magic of Seals and Croft compositions ? Too bad (everyone prepare to grimace) Glen Campbell ? If you can find recordings of his actual 'guitar playing', there's nobody out there that can cover any conceivable genre like that man. If you could access from his old tv show the time he had George Benson on, Whoa. I really felt sorry for George that he was on the show; he's a great player. He was solo doing his thing when out steps Glenn to take his part and it was something to not believe. Simply astounding.

There's tons of older Bands and Artists from whom to draw.

Regarding other artists I'd like to see examples of, how about some Jorma Kaukonan from Hot Tuna, or Chet Atkins of Jonathan Edwards. The Last is not a lead player but his voicings are neat, ex. Sunshine. Donovan too, or CCR.
