Playing minor pentatonic over its related minor key

About guitar scales. How to learn and use the pentatonic scale to play melodies, riffs, lead guitar solos, bass lines and songs. How to map the fretboard and connect pentatonic scale patterns. Plus music theory and how to play over chords and progressions.

Playing minor pentatonic over its related minor key

This is probably is probably a dumb question, but I'm trying to figure this out: Theoretically, I should be able to play a minor pentatonic scale over a chord progression in its key (for example, Em pent over a progression in Em) right? However, I notice that the Em pent scale contains a flatted 7th scale note, which the full Em harmonic scale, on which its chords are built, does not. Won't the flatted 7th scale degree of the Em pent clash with the 7th scale degree of the Em minor scale when one is played over the other?

Natural minor keys do not have raised sevenths. So the minor pentatonic works just fine.

The harmonic minor is created by raising the seventh scale degree for the purpose of making a V7 chord (for example, the raised scale degree in the key of Em creates a B7). In this case the minor pentatonic may clash a bit but only on the B7 and most guitarists use it anyway (and probably try to avoid the troublesome note).
